BAYER is a regional name for someone from Bavaria (German Bayern) This region of southern Germany derives its name from that of the Celtic tribe of the Boii who once inhabited this area. They were displaced in the 6th Century AD by a Germanic people, the Biooarii or Baiuarii, whose name is derived from that of their Celtic predecessors.

GENERATION ONE:

1.~ ~ ~ JOHANN BAYER was born around 1730 and was the son of GEORG BAYER. Johann married DOROTHEA (surname unknown) and their children included:

*              MATHES 2 BAYER, born 2 October 1761.

GENERATION TWO:

2. ~ ~ ~ MATHES BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN) was born on 2 October 1761 in Mantau, Bohemia. Mathes married ANNA TURNWALD on 13 November 1787. Anna was born on 14 February 1765 in Horschikowtiz, Bohemia and was the daughter of MATTHIAS TURNWALD and DOROTHEA JAKLIN.

*              LORENZ 3 BAYER, born 2 October 1761.

GENERATION THREE:

3. ~ ~ ~ LORENZ BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN > MATHES) was born on 15 July 1797 in Chotieschau, Bohemia and was a son of MATHES BAYER and ANNA TURNWALD. Lorenz was a Farmer. He married BARBARA GREIF. Barbara was born in 1790.

Children of LORENZ BAYER and BARBARA GREIF included:

*              ADALBERT 4 BAYER, born 1804.

GENERATION FOUR:

4. ~ ~ ~ ADALBERT BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN > MATHES > LORENZ) was born in 1804 in Auherzen, Bohemia and was a son of LORENZ BAYER and BARBARA GREIF. Adalbert was a Farmer and he married BARBARA REISIMA on 18 October 1833. Barbara was born in 1810 in Chotieschau, Bohemia and was the daughter of SIMON REISIMA and MARGARETHA KOPPL.

Children of ADALBERT BAYER and BARBARA REISMA included:

*              WENZL 5 BAYER, born 21 May 1836.

*              EVA BAYER, born 25 August 1853. Eva arrived in New Zealand on the ship "Queen Bee" as a single woman, aged 18 years, on 26 October 1872. She married JOSEPH TURNWALD in 1879. She died on 9 June 1938 aged 84 years. Joseph died shortly after, on 25 July 1938. They were both buried at Puhoi Public Cemetery (Row 5 Plots 97 & 98)

GENERATION FIVE:

5. ~ ~ ~ WENZL BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN > MATHES > LORENZ > ADALBERT) was born on 21 May 1836 in Chotieschau 78, Bohemia and was a son of ADALBERT BAYER and BARBARA REISIMA. Wenzl was a Carpenter. He left his home in Staab in February 1863 for the long journey to New Zealand, firstly to Prague then on to Hamburg, Altona, Gravesend and finally arriving in Auckland on the ship War Spirit on 28 June 1863.

Wenzl settled in Puhoi and became a Farmer. He married ANNA WENZLICK on 20 June 1867 at the Roman Catholic Chapel in Puhoi. Anna was born on 10 September 1842 in Littitz 62, Bohemia and was the daughter of JOSEF WENZLICK and ANNA BARAN. She arrived in New Zealand on the ship Liverpool on 6 Mar 1866.

Children of WENZL BAYER and ANNA WENZLICK were:

*              MARGARET BAYER, born 1869; died 15 January 1894; buried Puhoi Public Cemetery.

*              JOHN 6 BAYER, born 1 May 1871 in Puhoi, North Auckland, New Zealand.

*              ANNA BAYER, born1873; died 6 December 1913. Anna married (1) THOMAS BECHER in 1893 and (2) WENZL JAMES WECH in 1909.

*              WENZL 7 BAYER, born 1875.

*              JOSEPH WENZL BAYER, born 1877; died 5 October 1957.

*              MARY BAYER, born 1878.

*              MARY ELIZABETH BAYER, born 1879; died 14 December 1951. Mary married WALTER JAMES AUSTIN in 1915.

*              ADALBERT 8 BAYER, born 1 February 1881 in Puhoi, North Auckland, New Zealand.

*              BARBARA 9 BAYER, born 23 June 1883.

Wenzl died on 30 June 1887 in Puhoi and Anna died on 23 June 1911 also in Puhoi. They were both buried at Puhoi Cemetery.

GENERATION SIX:

6. ~ ~ ~ JOHN BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN > MATHES > LORENZ > ADALBERT > WENZL) was born on 1 May 1871 in Puhoi and was the eldest son of WENZL BAYER and ANNA WENZLICK. John married ELIZABETH RAUNER on 4 May 1897 in Puhoi. Elizabeth was born on 5 May 1872 in Puhoi and was the daughter of JOHANN RAUNER and ANNA PAUL who had both arrived in New Zealand on the War Spirit on 27 June 1863.

Children of JOHN BAYER and ELIZABETH RAUNER were:

*              FRANZ CHARLES BAYER, born 1898; accidentally drowned at Puhoi in 1915 aged 16 years.

*              CHRISTINA THERESA BAYER, born 21 July 1899; died 29 July 1988. Christina married ROBERT JOSEPH WECH in 1919. Robert was born in Puhoi, North Auckland, New Zealand in 1892.

*              ANNIE ELIZABETH BAYER, born 30 September 1901; died 24 April 1999. Annie married JAMES RAUNER in 1930. James died in 1978.

*              JOHN WENZL BAYER, born 23 May 1903; died 2 February 1978. John married ROSALIA MAY TOLHOPF in 1928 and had two daughters.

*              BENEDICT JOSEPH BAYER, born 10 July 1905; died 3 January 1997. Benedict married SYLVIA BERGER in 1935. They had a family of four children, three sons and a daughter.

*              GEORGE MICHAEL BAYER, born 25 September 1907; died 6 January 1931 aged 23 years.

*              SIMON ANDREW BAYER, born 8 March 1910; died 10 January 1997.

*              ANTON LAURENCE (TONY) BAYER, born 1913; died 19 August 2010. Anton married ALICE TOLHOPF and had two daughters. Alice was born on 17 June 1914; died 30 April 2003.

John died on 11 May 1948 in Puhoi and Elizabeth died on 2 December 1952. They were both buried at Puhoi Public Cemetery (Row 10, Plots 220 & 221)

7. ~ ~ ~ WENZL BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN > MATHES > LORENZ > ADALBERT > WENZL) was born in 1875 and was the second son of WENZL BAYER and ANNA WENZLICK. Wenzl married MARY RUSSEK in 1904. Mary was the eldest daughter of JOSEPH RUSSEK and CATHERINE PLESCHER.

Children of WENZL BAYER and MARY RUSSEK included:

*              MARY EVELINE BAYER, born 1905; died 26 July 1991 Mission Bay, Auckland. Mary was buried at Waikaraka Cemetery in Onehunga, Auckland.

*              GERTRUDE ELIZABETH BAYER, born March 1907; died July 1993.

*              MATILDA CHRISTINA BAYER, born 1908.

*              CLARA EMILY BAYER, born 1910.

*              LUCY CATHERINE BAYER, born 1911.

*              WENZL MATTHEW BAYER, born 1917. Wenzl was a Second Class Aircraft man with the Royal NZ Air Force during World War Two. He died on 21 May 1944 and was buried at Puhoi Cemetery. (Refer to my Roll of Honour for more details)

*              ELSIE JOSEPHINE BAYER, born 1914.

Wenzl died on 9 September 1963 and Mary died on 26 February 1975. They were both buried at Puhoi Public Cemetery.

8. ~ ~ ~ ADALBERT ANTHONY BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN > MATHES > LORENZ > ADALBERT > WENZL) was born on 1 February 1881 in Puhoi, North Auckland, New Zealand and was the forth son of WENZL BAYER and ANNA WENZLICK. Adalbert married ANNIE ELIZABETH ANDERSON on 12 January 1909 at St Peter & St Paul Roman Catholic Church in Puhoi. Annie was born on 1 February 1890 at Mahurangi Heads, Warkworth, New Zealand.

Children of ADALBERT BAYER and ANNIE ANDERSON were:

*              DAVID JOSEPH BAYER, born 5 December, 1910; died 30 September 1998, Pakuranga. David married KATHLEEN MARY RAUNER on February 23, 1938 in St Patricks Cathedral, Auckland. Kathleen was born in 1911 in Helensville. David and Kathleen had three children.

*              GLADYS MARY BAYER, born 20 February, 1912; died 17 December 1990, Auckland. Gladys married WILLIAM ALBERT TAYLOR on 20 November, 1937 in Puhoi. Gladys was buried at Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland. Gladys and William had two children.

*              LAURENCE WENZL BAYER, born 1 January 1914. Laurence married DORIS CATHERINE TOLHOPF on 24 September, 1941 in Puhoi. Laurence and Doris had six children. Laurence died on 21 May 1986 in Hamilton, and Doris died 1 May 1996 also in Hamilton, New Zealand.

*              MARJORIE ELIZABETH ANNIE BAYER, born 9 October 1915 in Puhoi. Marjorie married JOHN CATLIN on 24 February 1937 in St Patricks Cathedral, Auckland. Patrick was born in Hobart, Tasmania and died 16 January 1986 in New Zealand. Marjorie and Patrick had three children.

*              JAMES ADALBERT BAYER, born 5 September, 1917; died 13 July 2003 in Orewa. James married RITA DOMINICA LAWLESS on 29 January 1955 in Herne Bay, Auckland. Rita was born on 14 August 1921 in Dunedin, New Zealand and died 30 July 1984 in Takapuna, Auckland. James and Rita had three children.

*              BERNARD MATTHEW BAYER, born 31 May 1919 in Puhoi; died 30 June 1994 in Papatoetoe, Auckland. Bernard married KATHLEEN MARY McCATHIE on 5 July 1949 at St Josephs Church in Otahuhu. Kathleen was born Abt. 1925 in East Tamaki, Auckland. Bernard and Kathleen had one child.

*              LOUIS JOHN BAYER, born 8 November 1922; died 25 April 1987. Louis married BETTY MANUAL on 7 February 1945 in Puhoi. Louis and Betty had six children.

*              IMELDA CECELIA BAYER, born 25 February 1925 in Puhoi; died 3 February 2002 in Auckland. Imelda married ERNEST MOORE BURROWS on 1 March 1944 in St Patricks Cathedral, Auckland. Ernest was about Abt 1922 in Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. Imelda and ERNEST had five children.

*              MARY KATHLEEN BAYER, born 3 July 1928. Mary married MAURICE ALPHONSUS TURNER on 25 September 1948 in Puhoi. Maurice died on 31 May 1990 in Dairy Flat, Albany, New Zealand. Mary and Maurice had three children.

Adalbert died on 20 March 1952 in Auckland. Annie died on 26 October 1966 in Puhoi. Adalbert and Annie were both buried at Puhoi Cemetery.

9. ~ ~ ~ BARBARA BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN > MATHES > LORENZ > ADALBERT > WENZL) was born on 23 June 1883 and was the youngest daughter of WENZL BAYER and ANNA WENZLICK. Barbara married JOSEPH BECHER in 1904 and they had eight children, one daughter and seven sons. Joseph was the son of JOSEPH BECHER and ANNA BOTELSAK.

Children of BARBARA BAYER and JOSEPH BECHER included:

o               JAMES JOSEPH BECHER, born 1904.

o               ARTHUR THOMAS BECHER, born 1910.

o               WILLIAM FREDERICK BECHER, born 1911.

o               LESLIE JOSEPH BECHER (BECKER) born 8 September 1915 in Puhoi, North Auckland. Leslie attended Puhoi Convent School and church. After leaving school he worked on farms, doing fencing and milking, and even worked with his father in the kauri forests up north. Eventually the family left Puhoi and moved to Whakatane. Leslie served with the 2nd NZEF (24th Battalion) during World War One. He married NESSIE MICKELL after the war. Leslie died on 5 July 2002 and was buried at Piako Lawn Cemetery in Morrinsville.
