Notes from The Wenzlick Family of NZ (https://sites.google.com/site/wenzlickfamilyofnewzealand/Home)

Gregor Johann Wenzlick , son of Michael & Anna Wenzlick (nee Schusser), was born 26/10/1839 at Littitz 71, so was 26 when he emigrated to New Zealand in 1865 with his older brother John, sister-in-law Anna and their family on the ship "Liverpool". He was single when he arrived in New Zealand. His original allocated land was with his brother John, but after a year he moved to Thames.

He married Maria (Mary) Theresa Schott at Thames in 1869. She had emigrated to NZ also in 1866 as a single woman, as her father, mother, and other family members had emigrated to Minnesota, USA, around the same time. On returning to Puhoi in 1880 he had land to the west of the Puhoi River at the foot of Johnson's Hill (near Billings Road), but later moved to Auckland where he owned/managed the Sterling Boardinghouse in Upper Queen Street. In October 1904 he moved back to the Thames Coast taking over the Halfway House at Waikawau. He was a Carpenter at Puhoi and was a builder on the first Hotel & Spa at Waiwera.

He was a signatory to the application of the first German Hotel licence in Puhoi [dated 10/5/1879 on display in the Puhoi Hotel]. A news item taken from the NZ Herald files, reports on a Political meeting held in the Puhoi Schoolhouse on 25th July 1887 for local electors by Mr A Colbeck. Gregor was voted the Chairman of this meeting. He was also on the School Committee and Roads Board.

Gregor moved back to Thames from Puhoi and a short spell of three years in Auckland in 1904. He became a Naturalized New Zealand citizen as a Farmer in 1904 at age 64 years. The family farm at Waikawau and Kereta (Thames Coast), some land was supposedly later taken over by son Mick after the death of his wife Mary in 1934. Gregor died 20 April 1914 aged 74 years, and Maria died 11 December 1934 aged 87 years. They are buried together in the Tapu Cemetery.

Notes from Beverley Wenzlick (youngest daughter):

Gregory had to leave home at age eleven to stay and work at Ohaupo. Learnt all about farming, horses, orchard work and bee-keeping. Gregory became a bullock driver and bushman later. He tried to go to the Boer War but was too short, although he had a 17 hand horse. He survived many accidents and illnesses including typhoid fever and blood poisoning. Gregory was a very good dancer and won many competitions.

We loved our Dad, he had such a fun personality, strong, kind and understanding. Greg was a devoted husband and doting father. We couldn't play up - not because he'd growl at us but it would just be letting him down.

Gregory's sister Annie was Emma's great friend and introduced her to the Wenzlick family. Emma had "gone out" with Frank - his sandshoes put her off she said! Greg noticed her rich auburn hair and neat ankles (naughty boy!) He told her he had no money but she said "You are not afraid of work and neither am I" or words to that effect. Emma was Methodist and Gregory was Catholic so they decided to marry in the Anglican Church and bring up any children as Anglicans. They had a big wedding - bridesmaids dressed in pastel rainbow colours, white horses to pull their carriage etc. Emma's brother Robert was her groomsman.

After they married they lived at Manganai where Greg worked in the bush bullocking - a big change for a fashionable lady. Their first born, Gregory Alexander, was born in Auckland. Lived at Raurima and shifted to Kakahi in April 1911. They settled on the Thames Coast at Kerata in 1919.
