HISTORY OF THE BAYER NAME:

BAYER is a regional name for someone from Bavaria (German Bayern) This region of southern Germany derives its name from that of the Celtic tribe of the Boii who once inhabited this area. They were displaced in the 6^th Century AD by a Germanic people, the Biooarii or Baiuarii, whose name is derived from that of their Celtic predecessors.

GENERATION ONE:

1. ~ ~ ~ JOHANN BAYER was born around 1730 and was the son of GEORG BAYER. Johann married DOROTHEA (surname unknown) and their children included:

MATHES ² BAYER born 2 October 1761.

GENERATION TWO:

2.~ ~ ~ MATHES BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN) was born on 2 October 1761 in Mantau, Bohemia. He married ANNA TURNWALD on 13 November 1787. Anna was born on 14 February 1765 in Horschikowtiz, Bohemia and was the daughter of MATTHIAS TURNWALD and DOROTHEA JAKLIN. (Matthias was born on 16 September 1731 in Horschikowitz and he had married Dorothea in 1758. She was born on 9 May 1736 in Auherzen 24, Bohemia)

Children of MATHES MAYER and ANNA TURNWALD included:

LORENZ ⁴ BAYER, born 15 July 1797.

GENERATION THREE:

4. ~ ~ ~ LORENZ BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN > MATHES) was born on 15 July 1797 in Chotieschau, Bohemia. Lorenz was a Farmer. He married BARBARA GREIF. She was born in 1790.

Children of LORENZ BAYER and BARBARA GREIF included:

ADALBERT ⁵ BAYER born 1804.

GENERATION FOUR:

5. ~ ~ ~ ADALBERT BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN > MATHES > LORENZ) was born in 1804 in Auherzen, Bohemia. He was a Farmer.

Adalbert married BARBARA REISIMA on 18 October 1833. Barbara was born in 1810 in Chotieschau, Bohemia and was the daughter of SIMON REISIMA and MARGARETHA KOPPL. (Simon was born on 10 January 1785 in Chotieschau and he had married Margaretha on 23 October 1804. She was born in 1781 also in Chotieschau)

Children of ADALBERT BAYER and BARBARA REISIMA included:

WENZL ⁶ BAYER born 21 May 1836.

GENERATION FIVE:

6. ~ ~ ~ WENZL BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN > MATHES > LORENZ > ADALBERT) was born on 21 May 1836 in Chotieschau 78, Bohemia. He was a Carpenter. He left his home in February 1863 for the long journey to New Zealand, finally arriving on the “War Spirit” on 28 June 1863. He settled in Puhoi and became a Farmer. Wenzl married ANNA WENZLICK on 20 June 1867 at the Roman Catholic Chapel in Puhoi. Anna was born on 10 September 1842 in Littitz 62, Bohemia and was the daughter of JOSEF WENZLICK and ANNA BARAN. She arrived in New Zealand on the “Liverpool” on 6 Mar 1866.

MARGARET BAYER, born 1869; died 15 January 1894.

JOHN ⁷ BAYER, born 1 May 1871 in Puhoi.

ANNA BAYER, born 1873; died 6 December 1913. Anna married (1) THOMAS BECHER and (2) WENZL WECH.

ADALBERT ⁹ BAYER, born 1 February 1881 in Puhoi.

BARBARA BAYER, born 23 June 1883; died 16 June 1961. Barbara married JOSEPH BECHER.

Wenzl died on 30 June 1887 in Puhoi and Anna died on 23 June 1911 also in Puhoi. They were both buried at Puhoi Cemetery.

7. ~ ~ ~ JOHN BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN > MATHES > LORENZ > ADALBERT > WENZL) was born on 1 May 1871 in Puhoi. He married ELIZABETH RAUNER on 4 May 1897 in Puhoi. She was born on 5 May 1872 in Puhoi.

Children of JOHN BAYER and ELIZABETH RAUNER were:

CHRISTINA BAYER, who married ROBERT WECH. They had 12 children – 9 sons and 3 daughters.

BENEDICT BAYER, who married SYLVIA BERGER. They had 4 children – 3 sons and 1 daughter.

SIMON BAYER

JOHN BAYER, who married ROSE TOLHOPF and had 2 daughters.

ANNIE ELIZABETH BAYER, born 30 September 1901; died 24 April 1999. Annie married JAMES RAUNER.

ANTON (Tony) BAYER, who married ALICE TOLHOPF and had 2 daughters.

John died on 11 May 1948 in Puhoi and Elizabeth died on 2 December 1952, also in Puhoi.

8. ~ ~ ~ WENZL BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN > MATHES > LORENZ > ADALBERT > WENZL) was born in 1875. He married MARY RUSSEK.

Children of WENZL BAYER and MARY RUSSEK were:

MARY BAYER, died 26 July 26 1991 Mission Bay, Auckland. Mary was buried at Waikaraka Cemetery in Onehunga, Auckland.

9. ~ ~ ~ ADALBERT BAYER (GEORG > JOHANN > MATHES > LORENZ > ADALBERT > WENZL) was born on 1 February 1881 in Puhoi. He married ANNIE ELIZABETH ANDERSON on 12 January 1909 at St Peter & St Paul Roman Catholic Church in Puhoi. Annie was born on 1 February 1890 at Mahurangi Heads, Warkworth, NZ and died on 26 October 1966 at Puhoi. Adalbert died on 20 March 1952 in Auckland. Adalbert and Annie were both buried at Puhoi Cemetery.

Children of ADALBERT BAYER and ANNIE ANDERSON were:

DAVID JOSEPH BAYER, born December 05, 1910; died 30 September 1998, Pakuranga.

GLADYS MARY BAYER, born February 20, 1912; died 17 December 1990, Auckland. She married WILLIAM ALBERT TAYLOR November 20, 1937 in Puhoi. Gladys was buried at Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland.

LAURENCE WENZL BAYER, born 01 January 1914; died 21 May 1986, Hamilton. He married DORIS CATHERINE TOLHOPF September 24, 1941 in Puhoi. Doris died 01 May 1996 in Hamilton, New Zealand.

MARJORIE ELIZABETH ANNIE BAYER, who married JOHN CATLIN on 24 February 1937 in St Patrick's Cathedral, Auckland. He was born in Hobart, Tasmania and died 16 January 1986 in NZ.

JAMES ADALBERT BAYER, born September 05, 1917; died 13 July 2003, Orewa. James married RITA DOMINICA LAWLESS on 29 January 1955 in Herne Bay, Auckland. Rita was born on 14 August 1921 in Dunedin, NZ and died 30 July 1984 in Takapuna, Auckland.

BERNARD MATTHEW BAYER, born 31 May 1919, Puhoi; died 30 June 1994, Papatoetoe, Auckland. Bernard married KATHLEEN MARY MCCATHIE.

LOUIS JOHN BAYER, born 8 November 1922; died 25 April 1987. He married BETTY MANUAL on 7 February 1945 in Puhoi.

IMELDA CECELIA BAYER, born 25 February 1925, Puhoi; died 03 February 2002, Auckland. She married ERNEST MOORE BURROWS on 01 March 1944 in St Patrick’s Cathredral, Auckland.

MARY KATHLEEN BAYER, who married MAURICE ALPHONSUS TURNER on 25 September 1948 in Puhoi. He died 31 May 1990 in Dairy Flat, Albany, New Zealand.
