Wenzlick
families in Bohemia
The
name Bohemia derives from the tribes of Celtic Boii, it's earliest
known inhabitants from 500 to 100BC. Bohemia
became part of the Holy Roman Empire around 800AD.
Around
920AD the Duke of Bohemia was Vaclav I who was later canonised
as St Wenceslas. He is the patron saint of Czechoslovakia and the
referred “Good King Wenceslas” of the popular
Christmas carol, although he was never officially titled a “King”
or considered to be “good” .
From
the 12th century onward, mining attracted large numbers of German
settlers, leading to a strong Germanic influence in culture and
society. The Gothic Cathedral of St Vitus in Prague was started in
1344 (and not fully completed until 1929)
The
city of Plzen (Pilsen) and surrounding villages of Littitz
(Litice) and Schlowitz (Slovice) were the home towns of the
Wenzlick and Schott families, amongst other Bohemian immigrant
families.

Puhoi Historical Society webiste records the early history of
Puhoi, a settlement created by Bohemian (now Czech Republic)
immigrants to New Zealand from the 1860s.

as Ohaupo (in the Waikato district) another settled created by
Bohemian immigrants.

lion is the symbol of Bohemia signifying power & sovereignty

Peter's brother Johannes and sister Katherine settled in Milwaukee in
April 1850.

New Zealand on the “Queen Bee” on 29 October 1872 and his
occupation was listed as Tailor / Farm Labourer. He married ANNIE
REMIGER on 17 June 1879 at St Patricks Catholic Church, Auckland. At
the time Adalbert was working in Onehunga but they later settled in
Dargaville, North Auckland where some of their six children were
born. They later moved to Puhoi and lived on the main road north of
Puhoi. Adalbert died in 1893 in Puhoi and Annie was died in 1896.

lived with John Wenzlick's family after her parent's deaths, and
worked for Joseph & Margaret (nee Wenzlick) Schischka before her
marriage.
Mary married ALBERT HENRY BILLINGS. Albert was the son of WILLIAM
ARCHIBALD SINGER and ANN McPHEE. Mary and Albert lived to the west
of the Puhoi River, at the foot of Johnstone's Hill, where Mary's
parents had lived. Albert served in the First World War. His sister
Violet married Joseph Hellier Schischka.

settled in Maungakaramea and later in Whangarei, New Zealand. Henry
died on 3 August 2001 in Whangarei.

Wenzl was born on 21 May 1836 in Chotieschau 78, Bohemia. He arrived
in New Zealand on 28 June 1863 on the ship “War Spirit”
and his occupation was listed as Carpenter. They fostered their
nephew Tom (Tom's father Adalbert was Anna's brother) Wenzl died on
30 June 1887 in Puhoi, and Anna died on 23 June 1911 also in Puhoi.

in St Louis. Albert had previous experience in the realty business
from working at several real estate offices in the area. He developed
the Wenzlick Park Subdivision in 1952, and Wenzlick Avenue was named
after him.
